The Bihar School Examination Board runs the earliest major board examination in India. In 2026 the intermediate papers ran from 2 to 13 February and the matric papers from 17 to 25 February — both finished before several other state boards had begun. BSEB then declared the intermediate result on 23 March.

BSEB Patna sets the rhythm of the Bihar school year
15,12,687 candidates registered for the 2026 matric examination, written across 1,699 centres. Patna district alone accounted for 71,022 candidates at 70 centres.
Because BSEB examines and declares early, everything upstream moves earlier too. Registration, examination forms, internal and practical marks, centre logistics — all of it is compressed into a window that overlaps with the previous academic year’s teaching. A school that treats board submissions as a January activity is already late.
February in two shifts, and what it does to a school office
BSEB conducts its papers in two shifts a day — a morning shift from 9:30 am and an afternoon shift from 2:00 pm. Schools serving as examination centres therefore host two complete cohorts, two seating plans, two invigilation rosters and two collection cycles in a single day, for over a week.
The staff cost is real and it is invisible in most planning. Teachers on invigilation duty are not teaching. Attendance for the rest of the school degrades because the timetable is disrupted. The office is running centre logistics rather than admissions or fee collection.
The systems answer is unglamorous: a timetable that can absorb substitutions, an attendance system that can be marked from a phone, and fee reminders that continue to go out without anyone touching them during the fortnight when nobody has time.
The registration data a BSEB school must keep clean
As with any high-volume board, correction after the fact is slow and expensive. The fields that matter are established years before the examination: the student’s name, parentage, date of birth, category and subject combination.
The recurring failure is a mismatch between the birth certificate, the Aadhaar and the school’s own admission register — three documents, three spellings, and nobody reconciles them until a marksheet arrives with a name the student cannot use for a college admission.
The fix is structural. The student master needs to hold the document each field came from, so registration data is read from the source rather than retyped from a register that was itself retyped from something else.
Bihar reinstated detention in Classes 5 and 8
Bihar is among the states that ended the no-detention policy after the 2019 amendment to Section 16 of the RTE Act. A child who fails the annual examination in Class 5 or Class 8 gets remedial teaching and a re-examination within two months.
This is a genuine operational obligation, and it sits awkwardly against BSEB’s early calendar — the two-month remedial window for the Class 5 and Class 8 cohort overlaps with board examination season for Classes 10 and 12. A school needs to be able to identify the detained cohort, log the remedial teaching, schedule the re-examination and record its outcome, while the same office is running centre logistics.
Note that this differs from Uttar Pradesh next door, which retained the no-detention policy. Promotion rules are a state variable and school groups operating across the border need both encoded.
e-Shikshakosh and where a private school’s system fits
The Bihar School Education Department operates e-Shikshakosh at eshikshakosh.bihar.gov.in as the state’s school management information portal, covering government and government-aided schools.
A private unaided school’s internal system is a separate thing, and it should be. What a private school needs from its own software is the ability to produce the data the state and the board ask for — student rolls, category-wise demographics, attendance records, UDISE-format exports — without a month of manual compilation each time a format changes.

Compliance runs as rules-as-data with state overrides, evaluated on a weekly schedule with a daily document-expiry check, producing a per-category report with CSV export, plus a UDISE export for government reporting.
Parent communication uses Meta-approved WhatsApp templates with per-guardian opt-in enforced server-side, and the inbound bot answers in the language the parent wrote in — relevant in a state where a parent may write in Hindi, Bhojpuri-inflected Hindi or Urdu. Amounts, dates and names in those replies are computed in code, not generated by a model, so a localised message never invents a figure. The staff interface ships a Hindi locale.
Questions a Bihar Board school should ask a vendor
Can the system show which uploaded document each demographic field came from? Can it report marks-entry completeness by subject and section before the submission window closes? Can attendance be marked on a phone by a teacher who is invigilating in another building? And does it encode Bihar’s detention-and-re-examination rule, or does it assume the national default?
The board will not adjust its calendar for your school. The only lever available is being ready before February.
