Software vendors in India build for CBSE first. There are more CBSE schools, they publish their requirements centrally, and a CBSE-shaped product sells to more people. ICSE schools then get told the same product “supports ICSE”, which is true in the sense that a general-purpose school system can hold any school’s students.
It is worth being specific about where a CISCE school’s needs actually diverge, because there are only a few places — and they are the places that hurt.
What a CISCE school’s admin year looks like
Strip out the parts every school shares and three things characterise the CISCE operating year.
The first is that the school is the sole channel to the Council. Registration and entries run through the school on the CAREERS portal; candidates have no route of their own. Every data error is yours to find.
The second is that a real share of the result is generated inside your building. Internal assessment is not a token. It accumulates across the year in classrooms, laboratories and project work.
The third is that affiliation is inspection-heavy and document-heavy, with a specific expectation that the school is already running before it is affiliated.
The 80/20 split means marks live in two places
CISCE subjects commonly split 80 marks external and 20 internal, with a compulsory practical or project component inside the internal portion. Class 11 uses the same structure across many subjects.
For software this has three implications:
Your grading configuration must express the split. A gradebook that models only a single subject mark cannot represent the component structure, and staff end up maintaining a parallel spreadsheet — which is where inconsistency enters.
Component work needs to be traceable. A project mark is only defensible if the project still exists and can be tied to the student. That means an artefact store, not just a number field.
Rubrics need to be shared across sections. Two teachers marking the same practical in different sections should be applying the same criteria. Without a common rubric this is a matter of hope.

Registration season is a data-quality event
Because there is no candidate-facing correction loop, CISCE registration rewards work done months earlier. The errors that surface at submission are almost always identity mismatches and invalid subject combinations, and both are checkable long in advance.

Affiliation records CISCE expects you to hold
The CISCE affiliation route runs through its own e-affiliation platform and differs from CBSE’s in ways worth knowing before you plan:
- The school is generally expected to be already operational with enrolled students — often up to Class VI — before provisional affiliation is granted. You build and run the school first.
- A No Objection Certificate from the state government is required.
- A certificate concerning the land and building, completed and signed by the District Magistrate, Tehsildar, Sub-Registrar or other registering authority, must be filed.
- The inspection is broad: infrastructure, teaching and other staff, facilities, documentation, student assessment criteria, curriculum and teaching aids, extracurricular facilities, internet availability, documentation standards, conduct of examinations, accounts, medical amenities and staff, fire safety, lifts and staircases with railings, and water harvesting.
- On a satisfactory inspection and payment of the fee, provisional affiliation is granted, and may continue for five years.
Read that inspection list again. It includes conduct of examinations and accounts — meaning your examination records and your financial records are inspected artefacts, not back-office matters.

Choosing between a CBSE-shaped and a CISCE-shaped setup
The questions worth asking any vendor are narrow and answerable:
- Can I configure an 80 plus 20 subject structure without a workaround?
- Where does project and practical evidence live, and can I retrieve a specific student’s work two years later?
- Can two teachers in different sections mark the same component against one shared rubric?
- When registration season arrives, what exactly can I export, and in what format?
- Is ICSE a real board record in your system with its own subjects and syllabus, or a label on a CBSE structure?
